Ben Carter

Obituary of Ben Carter

Benjamin Wildish Carter passed away unexpectedly in Cairo, Egypt on May 23, 2023, after a month’s battle with infectious disease.

Born in St. John’s, NFLD., he was the son of Nicola Carter and Arthur Wildish.

Ben is survived by his parents, son Tallis Wildish Carter and his mother Jackie Barber, brother David Carter, sister Anna Wildish, uncle Cyrus Carter, stepmother Agnieszka Wildish, stepfather Jeff McInerney, stepsisters Jennifer Dow and Jessica McInerney, sister-in-law Evelyne Szaryk, and newborn niece Emma Carter.

Ben was valedictorian of his Moncton High School graduating class; he later graduated from Mount Allison University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and the University of Toronto where he pursued his professional career in the field of Library and Information Sciences. This led to his accepting a position at the library of the American University in Cairo. His work there over a ten-year period and his teaching in the department of philosophy touched the lives of hundreds of students and colleagues, not to mention the many friends he made outside of his work. His energy and insights encouraged others to embrace high ideals as well as helping them make realistic choices for their own happiness. Ben’s passion for music involved playing the guitar and listening to composers and musicians as diverse as J.S. Bach (his first love) and Robert Johnson (the blues always came a close second). In literature, the poetry of Wallace Stevens and Alden Nowlan and the novels of William Faulkner held a high place. He was also an inveterate traveler; his natural curiosity and life decisions led him to Germany, England, Ireland, India, Nepal, and Ethiopia, among other countries.
